Azmatullah Omarzai, an all-rounder for Afghanistan, was reprimanded and given one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday for challenging an umpire’s decision during the second ODI against Ireland in Bready. He received one penalty point for challenging an umpire’s decision, his first infraction in 24 months. The decision was confirmed on the day of the game, August 11, 2026.
Omarzai was found to have broken Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with dissatisfaction with an umpire’s decision during an international match. Four match officials submitted the complaint: third umpire Johnny Kennedy, fourth umpire George Brolly, and on-field umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black. He expressed his displeasure with the decision by remaining at the crease for a considerable period of time after being removed in the 41st over of Afghanistan’s innings.
Since Azmatullah admitted the crime and accepted the penalty recommended by Dean Cosker of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, there was no need for a formal hearing. According to ICC regulations, a Level 1 offence of this type may result in one to two demerit points, an official reprimand, and a monetary fine equivalent to half of the player’s match fee.
After the weather forced the cancellation of the first match without a toss, Afghanistan, under the leadership of Rahmat Shah, scored 299 for eight in the second ODI. After that, Rashid Khan’s game-winning six wickets helped Ireland be bowled out for 207 in 33.4 overs. The three-wicket victory also ensured Afghanistan’s qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Southern Africa. Afghanistan has qualified for the world competition for the fourth consecutive year and is currently leading the five-match series 2-0.
