Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s team, will guide her team through a challenging September schedule as they aim to win consecutive tournaments. The Asian Games take place from September 17 to 22 at Kōrogi Sports Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, shortly after the Asia Cup campaign, which takes place from August 28 to September 13 at Dubai International Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.
India’s quest for two major titles has a condensed schedule due to the four-day interval between the end of one event and the beginning of another. The ODI world champions, India, are among the favourites competing. However, Harmanpreet downplayed the attention around their eagerly awaited match against Pakistan on September 5, stating that her team would not let outside influences divert them.
In the Asia Cup group stage, India will play Thailand on August 30, Hong Kong, China on September 3, and Pakistan on September 5. September 10 and 11 are the dates of the semi-finals, while September 13 is the date of the final. After Sri Lanka won the 2024 final, India wants to take back the Asia Cup trophy.
Before the event, which starts here on Friday, Harmanpreet spoke at the captains’ news conference, saying, “Asia Cup is a very important tournament for us. Our team has been dominating for a long time, and we’ve won multiple titles in the Asia Cup. When you play back-to-back good cricket, your fans and audiences expect even more. The biggest challenge is when you have the ‘good team’ tag. Playing for those expectations is in itself a very big challenge. Only focus on cricket, focus on our aims, focus on our routines.”
India will defend their gold medal status from the 2023 Hangzhou Games, where they won the women’s cricket title, at the Asian Games. Indonesia is participating in the Women’s Asia Cup for the first time, while Sri Lanka is defending their 2024 triumph.
With 200 T20 Internationals under her belt, Kaur is tasked with leading India through both competitions in a short amount of time. The 37-year-old captain will play a key role in India’s attempt to win both titles and preserve the team’s reputation in international women’s cricket.
