According to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the country’s women’s national cricket team has automatically qualified for the first-ever ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027. According to SLC, the team’s position in the current tournament qualification procedure determined the qualification.
The competition is set to take place in India from February 14–28, 2027. Six teams will compete in a total of 16 matches under the T20 format. Following Sri Lanka’s loss of hosting rights owing to governance issues, India was confirmed as the host.
The news follows confirmation of the plans to host the 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Although it was considered, Sri Lanka will not host the competition. SLC applauded the national team’s qualification and promised to give the players the help they need to get ready for the competition.
India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka are the six teams who have qualified. The ICC Women’s T20I Rankings as of the cut-off date secured the remaining five teams their seats in the tournament, with India serving as the host nation. The competition, which brings the top six T20 teams together in a Champions Trophy format for the first time, is an important turning point for women’s cricket.
Additionally, Sri Lanka Cricket stated that it would keep collaborating closely with the ICC, the host country, and other pertinent parties to ensure the first Women’s Champions Trophy is successfully staged. In June 2026, the tournament window was rescheduled from June to July 2027 to February 2027. The competition will take place during a 15-day period from February 14 to February 28, 2027, according to the updated timetable.
It is one of the smaller multi-team women’s T20 events in recent ICC history because of the shortened structure, which ensures that the group stage and the final will be finished within a constrained but reasonable timeframe. The complete match schedule and particular group stage pairings have not yet been revealed, nor have the exact locations inside India been verified.
