After hitting 400 in the Ranji Trophy, Mizoram batsman Chinmay Sutar is now one of just ten players in first-class cricket history to make a quadruple century. On Monday, October 19, in a Plate Group match against Nagaland, the 29-year-old remained undefeated on 400 off 517 balls, joining Don Bradman, Brian Lara, and Hanif Mohammad in cricket’s most exclusive batting club.
Sutar joined the select group of hitters that includes Don Bradman, Brian Lara, and other well-known players by becoming the tenth player in game history to score 400. In 1994, Lara scored an incredible 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham. Later in his career, while playing for the West Indies against England, he reached another 400-run milestone—400 not out in 2004.
Sutar smashed 46 fours and seven sixes during his lengthy stint at the crease, demonstrating that his effort was based more on persistent aggression than endurance. When Lalrempuia, the final player in the order, came out to join him, he was on 231 and continued to score 400 not out. After 517 deliveries, Mizoram finally ended their innings at 581 for 9, leaving Sutar undefeated.
Sutar scored 99 and was run out in his first game. Prior to that, the southpaw played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the prestigious domestic team in Mumbai before relocating to Mizoram. Sutar hit seven sixes and 46 boundaries during the outstanding innings. When Lalrempuia, the final batter, joined him, he was 231. Sutar was undefeated on 400 runs from 517 deliveries when he declared the innings at 581/9 following his century.
