Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul is expected to play a significant part for India in the forthcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, according to bowling coach Morne Morkel, who highlights the batter’s experience and his capacity to assist the team’s younger players in adjusting to the circumstances. Both Tests are part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, and the series starts on August 15 at Galle International Stadium. Rahul has a unique insight into conditions and preparation because he is the only surviving member of India’s batting group from the 2017 tour of Sri Lanka.

In an interview with reporters before the Galle Test, Morkel complimented Rahul’s recent batting and stated that his communication skills and experience will assist the younger players in getting ready for the conditions in Sri Lanka. India’s early arrival, he continued, has given the players time to hone their unique strategies and learn how to score on the Galle surface.

Morkel emphasised the importance of Rahul’s communication with less experienced players during the preparation process while highlighting his recent batting performances. To give the team time to concentrate on individual game plans and techniques for scoring on the Galle surface, India came ten days before the first Test. Devdutt Padikkal scored an undefeated 142 in India’s six-wicket victory in the practice match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI.
He said, “KL, the last couple of years, the way he’s been leading up front with the batting has been exceptional, and that’s a sort of communication that we expect him to speak to the guys here in the preparation at the nets and about what to expect. But I think, our guys have learned a lot about their games individually over the last couple of months and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve come out here 10 days earlier to give the guys the best opportunity to prepare to work on their individual game plans and individual game plans, and yeah, just to figure out how they’re going to score on the surface here.”
Morkel described India’s bowling strategy for the series, pointing out that, considering Galle’s historic traits, the squad will mostly rely on its spin attack. Three spinners would be a good option, according to the bowling coach, enabling India to apply pressure from both ends while keeping their bowling combinations flexible.
Morne Concluded by saying, “I think, traditionally, you look at the venue, the stats, and how that’s been played up. That’s a sort of the way to go. I think, the way that we go with our spin bowling attack, our spinners, it’s a very attacking option. And then you can sort of create pressure with seam from one side and always allow yourself with spin to operate from a, from another end.”
