A punishment that “sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team” has been demanded by former captain Michael Vaughan in response to Brydon Carse’s recent involvement in a drinking scandal. The ECB launched an investigation after a video of Carse being handcuffed by police outside a nightclub and briefly taken into custody while out with his Durham teammates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts surfaced.
Following an incident in Derby on Saturday, 23 August 2026, during Durham’s celebration of their County Championship victory against Derbyshire, Brydon Carse was the subject of an investigation. Police handcuffed the fast bowler, but they did not arrest him and let him go without being charged. After an ECB referral, the cricket regulator confirmed an inquiry.
In reaction to the event, former England captain Michael Vaughan has demanded that the ECB impose severe penalties. In order to address a larger pattern of off-field behaviour among contracted England players, Vaughan emphasised the necessity of swift action.
BBC quotes Vaughan saying, “Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what’s going to come.”
He further added, “It’s the only punishment that will really hurt players. I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he’ll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice. I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won’t stand for that behaviour any more.”
The former cricket player who is now a commentator emphasised the need for accountability among the England team while also acknowledging that Carse needs help. He pointed out that the fast bowler’s personality needs to be carefully controlled and that those in his immediate vicinity need to give him wise counsel. Vaughan emphasised that in order to stop future wrongdoing, a clear precedent needs to be set.
