‘Big Shoes to Fill’ Jordan Cox Breaks Silence on Replacing Jos Buttler

England will be missing wicketkeeper-batsman Buttler in the third and decisive one-day international in South London, following a hamstring injury he sustained during Thursday’s run chase at Headingley, where Sri Lanka’s win tied the series. The injury offers Cox another chance, as he has been building his presence within England’s national team amid significant upheaval.

Buttler retired injured on 67 off 45 balls after experiencing a hamstring twinge during the Headingley game. He came back to the crease later but only stayed for four more balls before departing the field. Sri Lanka won the match by 16 runs, tying the three-match series at 1-1. England will receive more details about the severity of Buttler’s injury early next week after an MRI scan. Dan Lawrence, the Surrey batsman, has been named in England’s squad as backup ahead of the crucial match.

The 25-year -old ’s development has occurred during the turmoil triggered by Ben Stokes’ surprising international retirement and Brendon McCullum’s dismissal as England’s red-ball coach. The former New Zealand captain continues to lead England’s limited-overs teams.

After stepping in for the sidelined Jacob Bethell at number three, Cox recorded three half-centuries during England’s 3-0 Test series victory over Pakistan. He also made a strong impression behind the stumps in the series finale at Edgbaston, stepping in after first-choice wicketkeeper Jamie Smith was injured.

Cox hailed Jos Buttler as England’s finest white-ball player and acknowledged that he faces an enormous challenge to live up to expectations. Nevertheless, he is eager for the challenge in England’s final home match of the summer.

Talking to the Press Association, Butler said, “Someone’s unfortunate injury gives someone else an opportunity and, whoever plays, it’s going to be an amazing last day of the year. If I do get that opportunity, it will be awesome. You’ve got to look forward to the challenge. They’re big shoes to fill, for sure – Jos is probably the best ever white-ball cricketer we’ve produced. He’s definitely someone I’ve looked up to, so from watching him on TV to being in a squad with him is pretty amazing, just knowing the calm nature he has and the presence around the dressing room.”

Cox taking his position behind the stumps at The Oval would mark a notable moment in his early international career. The third ODI is poised to be the decisive match in the series, with England and Sri Lanka tied at 1-1 following the game at Headingley, and the event holds significant importance for any player granted a starting spot.

The RCB cricketer added, “Being 1-1 isn’t what we wanted, but for the series to be on the line and to finish at The Oval, with a packed house, will be pretty special. They’re the games you want to be playing in. It’s about enjoying the moment and finishing the summer on a high.”
