After reaching a one-year contract extension, Sussex announced on October 16, 2026, that Jofra Archer would stay with the team for the 2027 campaign. With the signing, the 31-year-old pace bowler will have spent a total of 12 seasons with Sussex, dating back to his 2016 first-class debut at Hove.
After making his county debut in 2016, the agreement prolongs the 31-year-old Barbadian’s tenure at Hove to twelve seasons. Before making a comeback for Sussex in June 2025, Archer missed four years of red-ball cricket due to a string of ailments. Archer, who has claimed 223 first-class wickets at a 25.17 average, expressed his excitement at carrying on with his red-ball career with the team.
In an official statement, Archer said, “I have always felt at home at Sussex since making my first-class debut in 2016, and it was an easy decision to stay here for a further year.”
The announcement solidifies one of the longest-lasting player-club partnerships in county cricket in the modern age, spanning a time that has seen both long stints on the sidelines and international highs. Archer talked enthusiastically about his long history in the county.
With 223 wickets at an average of 25.17 across his first-class career, Archer is one of the most productive speed bowlers to have played for Sussex in the contemporary era. That total covers a career that started in 2016, has been cut short by injuries, but has never been cut off from the county.
A major injury layoff ended Archer’s county career. Before donning Sussex whites once more in June 2025, he was away from red-ball cricket for four years. Prior to being called up to the England Test team, Archer returned to county cricket. In July 2025, he made his first Test debut since 2021, when England played India.
