For the England Lions T20 team’s three-match series against West Indies A at St Kitts and Nevis, Thomas Rew has been named captain. When the series begins in November, it is widely anticipated that the 18-year-old Somerset wicketkeeper-batter will become the youngest player to captain the Lions.
Rew has been called up to the England Men’s team for the T20 series in Australia after leading the Young Lions to the ICC Men’s U19S World Cup final earlier this year. Following the Lions’ third game of their 50-over series in St Kitts and Nevis, Rew, Eddie Jack, and James Coles will depart for that series.
Nine players who were revealed as part of the new Central Contracts earlier this week are part of the two teams. Mason Crane, Eddie Jack, Ben McKinney, Liam Patterson-White, Coles, and Rew have development deals, while Rehan Ahmed, Sam Cook, and Lawrence have full central contracts.
The announcement comes during an incredible week for Rew. In the same few days that this Lions captaincy was confirmed, he received his maiden England developmental contract and was added to a senior team for the T20 series in Australia. After Andrew Flintoff resigned as head coach, Jonathan Trott, a former England batter, assumed leadership of the Lions’ winter program.
The Lions will play five one-day matches against West Indies A after the T20 matches in the Caribbean are complete. Dan Lawrence is captain of that 50-over team, and Sam Cook is also involved. Both players will use the tour as a platform before England’s three-Test assignment in South Africa in December.
