‘Women’s Game Is Ready’: Jay Shah Hails India After Asian Games Final

ICC chairman Jay Shah and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team following its successful defence of the Asian Games gold medal, achieved with a commanding 147-run win over Sri Lanka in the final held in Nisshin on Tuesday. India delivered a commanding all-around performance to secure its first gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games. ICC Chairman Jay Shah posted on X to congratulate the team and offered a notable comment on the future of women’s cricket, especially with the Olympics scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles.

Shah wrote, “Congratulations to India women’s team for winning the Asian Games gold! And well played Sri Lanka on clinching silver in Japan after a strong campaign. As we look ahead to cricket’s return to the Olympics at #LA28, spectacles like this prove that the women’s game is ready to command the biggest multi-sport stages.”

Mandhana hit seven sixes and five fours in her innings, while Shafali Verma scored 48 off just 29 balls. Richa Ghosh then delivered a late surge with an unbeaten 49 from just 22 balls, helping India set the highest total ever recorded in the women’s Asian Games cricket tournament. Saikia praised the team for winning consecutive Asian Games gold medals and also pointed to their recent triumph at the Asia Cup.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia also extended his congratulations to the Indian women’s team on X, celebrating not only their victory at the Women’s Asian Games but also their win at the previous Asia Cup.

Saikia said, “Heartiest congratulations to our Women’s Team @BCCIWomen on winning Gold at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya! Back-to-back Asian Games Gold medals — a remarkable achievement and a truly proud moment for Indian cricket. After a dominant Asia Cup campaign in Dubai , the team carried that winning momentum into Nagoya, playing with confidence, flair and determination throughout. Congratulations to each member of Women’s Team , both players and support staff. You have made the nation proud once again!”

India defended its gold medal from the previous Asian Games, once again defeating Sri Lanka in the final to secure victory. India’s score of 216/3 also surpassed Hong Kong’s previous Asian Games record of 202/4, which was set against Mongolia in the 2023 Hangzhou Games. The total was also the highest ever recorded in a women’s T20 final, breaking the previous record of 210 set by Brazil against Spain earlier this year.
