Punjab is seeking to inject experience into their red-ball team in an effort to end a 38-year drought for the Ranji Trophy title. In a major development, the Punjab Cricket Association ( PCA) has appointed 38-year -old Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav as a guest player for the 2026-27 domestic season.
Umesh’s capacity to build pace and induce movement with the new ball brings a valuable dimension to Punjab’s attack, especially in longer-format matches. He also contributes international and first-class experience to a relatively inexperienced team and is capable of leading the attack while collaborating with the younger fast bowlers.
Umesh has played 55 Tests, 75 ODIs, and nine T20Is for India. He has also claimed the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha and contributes significant domestic and international experience to Punjab’s team. PCA president Amarjit Mehta confirmed Umesh’s transfer and underscored the pacer’s qualifications.
Times of India quotes Mehta saying, “He has proven credentials as a bowler. He has won the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha and has been a champion bowler for India as well. We have taken the decision keeping our red-ball cricket in focus. Punjab have not won the Ranji Trophy since 1992 and we think Umesh is someone who can deliver us the title. His experience is going to be invaluable to the youngsters in the team. There is so much to learn from someone of Umesh’s stature.”
Punjab will open their 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign against Assam at New Chandigarh on October 11, with Umesh’s experience anticipated to strengthen both their pace attack and dressing room.
Umesh’s most recent appearance for India was in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. At 38, the pacer is still in good shape and is anticipated to join Punjab’s Ranji Trophy camp within the next few days. Punjab coach Amit Uniyal supported the decision to include Umesh in the squad and cited his experience of bowling in Indian conditions as the reason.
