Trent Boult Joins Sydney Thunder for Entire BBL 2026-27 Season in Major Signing

Trent Boult Joins Sydney Thunder for Entire BBL 2026-27 Season in Major Signing

New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult has agreed to a one-year contract with Sydney Thunder for the full 2026-27 Big Bash League season, including the finals. However, the agreement might cause a scheduling conflict for the left-arm pacer, especially if Thunder advance to the knockout rounds. The BBL is due to end on 26 January, while the SA20 will kick off in South Africa on 17 January.

Boult forms a right-arm and left-arm new-ball duo with fellow New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson at the Thunder. The Thunder’s bowling attack, which has struggled in recent seasons, gains a great deal of experience from this move. Boult had previously played eight games for the Melbourne Stars in the 2022–2023 BBL. His comeback to the league is his first time playing in the BBL since his time with the Stars.

Boult might be able to travel to South Africa in time for MICT’s inaugural match if Thunder’s league-stage campaign ends in Brisbane on January 17, if they do not make it to the finals. The 36-year-old played for the Melbourne Stars in 2022–2023, his lone prior BBL season. He will now play for the Sydney Thunder alongside Lockie Ferguson, another fast bowler from New Zealand.

In the most recent ETPL, Boult was the second-highest wicket-taker while playing for the Edinburgh Castle Rockers. In that competition, he took 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.63, demonstrating his ongoing success in franchise cricket across formats.

Given the packed worldwide franchise schedule, Boult’s dedication to the entire BBL 2026–2027 season, including the finals, is noteworthy. The SA20 in South Africa is planned to start on January 17, while the BBL 2026–27 season is set to end on January 26. There may be overlap at the end of the BBL season because Boult is anticipated to play for MI Cape Town once more in the SA20, with their campaign starting on January 20.

Following consecutive last-place performances in 2023–2024 and 2025–2026, Trevor Bayliss was replaced by Thunder head coach Andrew Flintoff in June 2026. Flintoff underlined the importance of having both Boult and Ferguson in the team.

ESPN quotes Flintoff saying, “Trent has an amazing reputation for being a great bloke, a team player, and a world-class performer. Having a couple Kiwis in the team who have played a lot of cricket together over the years brings a level of familiarity, and I think they complement each other really well as a right-arm and left-arm pairing. One of the things we haven’t been able to do in recent times is take wickets with the new ball, so hopefully these two can remedy that.”
