Jake Weatherald Makes Big County Move, Signs With Warwickshire for 2027

Jake Weatherald Makes Big County Move, Signs With Warwickshire for 2027

The 31-year-old left-hander will be allowed to participate in the Rothesay County Championship after joining the Bears before the start of the season. The signing comes after Weatherald had a challenging week on the international front.

After scoring 0 and 23 in an unexpected loss to Bangladesh, he was removed from Australia’s Test team. His current Test average after six games is 20.36. He will be replaced by Matt Renshaw, who will open the second Test in Mackay with Travis Head.

Weatherald, who is well-known for his aggressive style and potent stroke play at the top of the order, has the ability to swiftly put pressure on opposing bowling attacks and alter the course of a game. Weatherald has solid county credentials when he gets to Edgbaston. In nine innings for Leicestershire in 2026, he scored 483 runs at an average of 60.37.

In an official statement, Weatherald said, “I’m thrilled to be joining Warwickshire for the 2027 season. Edgbaston is one of the great grounds in world cricket and the opportunity to represent such a prestigious county was something I couldn’t pass up. I enjoyed playing in England this year so to have the opportunity to join the Bears ahead of the Ashes is really exciting. Warwickshire has a proud history and a talented squad, and I’m looking forward to contributing both on and off the field.”

James Thomas, the director of cricket for Warwickshire, made the announcement, saying, “Jake is a player we’ve admired for a long time. He is a proven performer who has scored heavily at the highest level and gives us additional strength at the top of the order.”

Will Young of New Zealand and Manav Suthar, an Indian left-arm spinner who will join the team following the current Test series in Sri Lanka, are their overseas additions for the balance of the 2026 County Championship season. They are in third place in Division One and will play Sussex at Edgbaston on August 20.
