Though the IPL 2027 season is still months away, rumours of a potential big player transfer have already surfaced. For IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad appointed Ishan Kishan as captain after Pat Cummins was unavailable for the first half of the season.
Reports suggest that Star Indian top-order batter Abhishek Sharma is dissatisfied with Sunrisers Hyderabad and wishes to leave the Hyderabad-based franchise. Abhishek Sharma has played a key role in the SRH setup over several seasons. The Indian opener has been with the franchise since 2019 and became a regular starter in 2022, partnering with Travis Head.
The 2016 IPL champions are believed to be eager to assign leadership duties to Ishan Kishan, who had temporarily taken charge of the team in the early matches of IPL 2026 because Pat Cummins’ arrival was delayed. It has been reported that since Cummins is unlikely to feature in next year’s edition of the IPL due to a packed international calendar, Kishan will lead the side, and Abhishek is not happy with that, so he wants to explore new options as early as next season.
The report indicates that informal discussions have occurred with Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings. Delhi Capitals are also a potential destination, in part because Abhishek’s mentor, Yuvraj Singh, has joined their team. Nevertheless, no agreement has been finalised, and there is no official confirmation of a transfer.
Talking to TOI, a source revealed, “It’s not a secret anymore that Abhishek Sharma is unhappy at SRH since the captaincy went to Ishan Kishan. He has been with the franchise for a long time and clearly had captaincy ambitions. Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings were being explored as potential destinations, and we can’t rule out Delhi Capitals either, since his mentor Yuvraj Singh is part of the set-up now.”
He further added, “There are not many captaincy opportunities right now. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are two options, but most other teams appear sorted. So even if SRH and Abhishek agree to part ways, the big question remains: where to? And how will SRH position itself even if they agree? A cash deal? Player trade? Lots of factors.”
